Bone Broth, more than “all the rage”

I’ve got a simmering pot of goodness brewing right behind me in the kitchen, and it’s got me thinking I should share about the goodness of bone broth.

It’s a “liquid gold” that's been touted for its health benefits across cultures and centuries.

Whether you're sipping it for comfort, cooking with it for flavor, or treating it as a nutritional powerhouse, bone broth is making a splash in kitchens worldwide.

What is Bone Broth?

Bone broth is no ordinary stock. It's crafted by simmering bones (often with bits of meat still clinging to them), vegetables, herbs, and spices in water for an extended period—think hours, not minutes.

This slow cooking process extracts nutrients, collagen, and flavors from the bones, resulting in a rich, savory liquid that warms the soul and nourishes the body.

What's Inside?

  1. Collagen and Gelatin: The long simmering process breaks down collagen from the bones into gelatin, which is rich in amino acids like proline, glycine, and glutamine. These compounds are vital for joint health, skin elasticity, and gut health.

  2. Minerals: Bones are packed with essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. These minerals leach into the broth during cooking, making it a mineral-rich elixir that supports bone health and overall vitality.

  3. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs): GAGs such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are naturally found in bone broth. These compounds are famous for their role in joint health and may help reduce inflammation.

  4. Amino Acids: Besides those found in collagen and gelatin, bone broth contains a variety of other amino acids that support overall health and well-being.

  5. Electrolytes: When bones simmer, electrolytes like potassium and sodium are released into the broth, making it a hydrating choice for replenishing after exercise or during illness.

Why Drink Bone Broth?

  • Supports Gut Health: The amino acids and gelatin in bone broth may help repair the lining of the gut, promoting digestive health and potentially reducing symptoms of leaky gut syndrome.

  • Promotes Joint Health: The collagen and GAGs in bone broth are believed to support joint health by providing the building blocks for cartilage repair and maintenance.

  • Boosts Skin Health: Collagen is essential for skin elasticity and hydration, making bone broth a natural beauty elixir from the inside out.

  • Provides Essential Nutrients: With its rich mineral content, bone broth can supplement your diet with crucial nutrients that are sometimes lacking in modern diets.

How to Enjoy

My favourite way to enjoy bone broth is Beck’s Broth. I’m not a coffee drinker, but their hot chocolate is ON POINT (and if I WAS gonna drink a coffee, it would be this one too.)

But if that’s not your jam, you can also:

  • Sip It: Enjoy a warm mug of bone broth as a soothing and nutritious drink.

  • Cook With It: Use it as a base for soups, stews, sauces, and even risottos to add depth of flavor and a nutrient boost.

  • Freeze It: Make a big batch and freeze it in portions for quick and convenient use.

  • Get Creative: Use bone broth in place of water when cooking grains like rice or quinoa for added flavor and nutrition.

Happy sipping :)
